Our Residency Lists
One of the essential components to a successful match is to send your application to relevant residency programs. Almost all residency programs in the United States have screening criteria (minimum requirements) that they use to select applicants for interviews. Using various sources including direct residency program database inputs, email responses, and direct telephone communications, we provide you with one-of-a-kind customized IMG friendly residency lists. Based on your credentials, Match A Resident (MAR) will generate the list of residency programs that you need to apply to in the 2011-2012 Match season.
Typically, residency applicants make countless calls and send a plethora of emails to compile a list of relevant programs to suit them. The purpose of MAR is to ease the process by already completing such inquiries for residency applicants worldwide. This allows residency applicants to focus on more on the application and less time of researching hundreds of residency programs. Therefore, the residency programs get less phone calls and much less disrupting emails.
By obtaining your MAR residency lists there is NO NEED FOR YOU TO MAKE PHONE CALLS OR SEND EMAILS TO RESIDENCY PROGRAMS seeking minimum requirements! We have already added all the minimum requirements for you. Do not spend your money on IMG friendly lists that are available on the web, instead, receive it free of charge with any paid customized subscription.
Residency requirements are obtained by direct contact and in three phases:
1. Residency program input
2. Phone verification
3. Email verification
**Static information on residency program websites is NOT used unless an explicit timestamp is provided or instructed by the program**
Questions you may ask:
Who obtains program information?
Trained on site update team in a supervised setting in our San Diego office.
When is the information is obtained?
MAR annual updates start in July until mid August. That allows us to get the information from the most recent person in charge on the residency program side.
How do you ask the questions?
Asking the right question is important. By asking a question in a specific manner, we get the most accurate answers. For example, we do not ask this question this way: "Do you require the ECFMG certificate by the time of application?" instead we ask it in this manner: "By the time of application, do you require the ECFMG certificate?". This permits us to ask the questions without allowing the program coordinator to jump into a premature response-- as the ECFMG certificate is ultimately required by all programs, but not all by the time of application. Also, we pay special attention to what is a program requirement versus a preference. We have designed the system to work such that if the criteria is required, it will be filtered initially in the MAR system, but not if the criteria is preferred. We add preferred criteria in the Additional Comments area.
What information is obtained?
Residency programs do not have much time for unnecessary questions and MAR team chooses to obtain answers to questions that are most important and relevant. MAR has designed two filters: a strong filter, located on the main profile page, and a weak filter, located in the program list view.
- Foreign graduates percentage (strong filter)
- USMLE Step 1, 2 CK requirements (strong filter)
- Time in years since graduation (strong filter)
- US clinical experience requirements (strong filter)
- Citizenship and visas sponsored/accepted (strong filter)
- ECFMG certification requirement by application time (weak filter)
- USMLE attempts (weak filter)
- USMLE CS requirement by application time (weak filter)
MAR's Update Team:
Our team of highly trained experts does not use websites or such sources to complete our requirement updates unless instructed by the program. Each team member makes the calls, writes notes and additional comments about each program, and reports the experience ON VIDEO for you to see. In addition, our lists are dynamic, meaning any updates or changes made to program requirements will be automatically reflected in the list.

FAQs
a) Why do I need MAR?
Are you planning to contact each residency program seeking its minimum requirements? Contacting residency programs to request their minimum requirement is indeed a difficult and time-consuming process, which may also be costly. Match A Resident's Update Team has already added residency program information, including minimum requirements in one database. In other words, you do not need to contact every residency program seeking minimum requirements.
One mistake many residency applicants make each year is sending random applications without prior planning. With nowadays limited residency positions and intense competition with strong candidates, you cannot afford such mistakes, you must carefully plan how to maximize your chances for a residency position by securing as many interviews as possible. *ERAS application can be very expensive when sending random applications. Whereas, sending relevant ERAS applications allows you a more efficient and successful process. Obtaining the list of relevant residency programs is the most important first step to take before sending your application. * Match A Resident is NOT an application submission system, Match A Resident DOES NOT replace ERAS. ERAS is the official application submission system and Match A Resident is a residency customized list provider.
The Match A Resident system works by eliminating programs that have higher requirements than your current status in the database. Then, it generates a relevant customized list based on the following five strong requirements:
For example:
- 1. If you are a foreign medical graduate (IMG/FMG), Match A Resident system will automatically generate a match list that is IMG Friendly. This assures that you apply to only those programs that indeed have IMGs.
- 2. The system then takes into consideration the other credentials. For example, if your USMLE scores are 75 on steps 1 & 2ck, the MAR system automatically generates a list of programs that do not have minimum score requirement, in other words programs that do not care about the USMLE scores. That means if any program requires 76 or above, the MAR system will exclude them from your customized list. Remember, the same procedure is repeated using the other credentials. A final list is generated based on all credentials combined. *To add more accuracy and strength to the lists, Match A Resident has added the strictly reported USMLE attempts requirements in an “additional comments section”. This allows you to view potential programs that may have an exception to the USMLE attempts by looking at other stronger credentials (Such as high USMLE scores or strong USCE).
b) What does paid membership mean?
Registration is free which provides you with a list of residency programs matching your credentials without revealing their identity with a some exposure to program details. Paid membership exposes the identity of the programs on your customized list including program names, their IDs, their physical address, contact information with phone numbers and emails. Also, it will provide you with additional comments that are not part of the filtering system and that include, but is not limited to numbers of USMLE attempts, ECMFG certification requirements for interview, California Status Letter requirement. In support to the additional comments, paid membership features reported program reviews and shared member comments. Along with each customized report, MAR will give you free access to the corresponding IMG friendly list. c) What are Match A Resident membership fees?
First specialty access - $79
Additional Specialties - 10% off
All specialties access - $399 $299
Membership access is good until *April 1st 2012.
