The road to US medical residency is long and difficult whether you are a US IMG or Non-US IMG. It is important that IMG residency candidates are aware of the official residency services and other helpful resources available throughout the residency application process.

1st step

Register with ECFMG

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is crucial for IMGs, acting as a Dean’s Office and providing essential services such as the ERAS Token necessary for residency applications. Ensure you obtain ECFMG certification to begin your residency journey.

2nd step

Take USMLE Exams

Passing the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK exams is mandatory for all residency candidates. Plan your exam schedule wisely to achieve ECFMG certification in time for your residency applications.

3rd step

Register with AAMC

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is the gateway to ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) and offers extensive resources from pre-med through to fellowship stages.

4th step

Start Researching Programs

Early research into residency programs is vital. Utilize platforms like Match A Resident to access customized lists and relevant information for IMGs, streamlining your search and application process.

5th step

Purchase Token and Register for ERAS

Obtain your ERAS Token from ECFMG and register with ERAS to compile and submit your residency applications. This platform is where you will select programs and apply.

6th step

Complete Supporting Documents

The ERAS application includes several components like the Common Application and Personal Statement. If writing is not your forte, consider services that specialize in crafting standout Personal Statements for medical residency candidates. Personal Statement service.

7th step

Register with NRMP

The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) manages the Match process, where you will rank your preferred programs post-interviews and potentially participate in the Post-Match SOAP if necessary. Registration typically opens in mid-September and runs through late February.
